Bought this book originally when my labrador was having puppies and lost it. My Norfolk whelped two weeks ago and I bought another copy. Had totally forgotten how brilliant it was and tells you everything you need to know. There are some pretty gruesome bits too but I guess you need to know both the good and the bad. Just read the various chapters as you go along. Everything from going into season, mating, whelping and finally bringing up the puppies is really helpful. My bitch did everything according to the book and so all my whelping kit, spare bottles and other paraphernalia are all lying unopened in a box apart from the stethoscope which I used to try and listen to the puppies heart beats when they were still in her. Didn't work though!

This book served its purpose as a guide. Its not a bible please remember that when reading this. For example - it reads that puppies should be born 4 hours between each other WORST CASE and if the puppy is born after vet attention is needed. I called my emergency vet and was told the last puppy might not make it, the book also suggests that the pup wont live. 12 hours or so a beautiful pup was born who turned out to be the strongest. Of course if you have any concern you should contact your vet. The book otherwise is good :) and would recommend it.It gave a good indication and was helpful, I was clued up for the pregnancy.

All you need for rearing and whelping. Nononsense approach with plenty of sensible facts. Our only criticism is the advice to be in close contact with, and reliance on the vet, if we'd followed all the times we should talk to or get the vet to visit we'd be taking out a bank loan! Our lurcher bitch whelped her first litter of five pups with no fuss, no mess, no panic, and no vet. Maybe we were lucky.....

An invaluable guide to anyone considering breeding from their bitch. I bred my first litter of pups back in December and this book talked me through every stage and helped put my mind at rest as the labour/delivery took place. Six puppies all born safe and sound!

Six healthy puppy's, this book was recommended to us by our vet when we found out our CKC was pregnant and it was invaluable. As the title says we have six health CLC puppies and as they are only two weeks old we are still constantly referring to this book. I can recommend this book especially for 1st time breeders as we were.

Enjoyed reading this as very informative. Only downside for me as a first time breeder was that it was very in depth in parts regarding things that can go wrong during whelping. Found this a little concerning. Suitable for someone learning physiology of dogs however.
